The Social Security Administration will let us know about the 2025 COLA increase soon. SSI recipients got their 2024 boost on December 29, 2023. It wasn’t the biggest in the last three years, but it was still above average.
Last year, they saw a 3.2% increase. We don’t know the exact amount for 2025 yet, just some guesses for now.
2025 COLA Boost Timeline for SSI Recipients
SSI beneficiaries will get their 2025 COLA increase on December 31, 2024, making them the first to receive it.
For SSDI and retirement benefits, the first payments will be on January 3. If you’re not in the first group, you might have to wait 1 to 3 more weeks.
Mark October 10 on your calendar. That’s when the Administration will announce the 2025 COLA increase. This date is important because it’s when the Bureau of Labor Statistics releases the CPI for the third quarter.
What to Expect for the 2025 COLA Adjustment in SSI
The latest 2025 COLA projection is about 2.63%, according to the Senior Citizens League, which has been accurate with past forecasts.
If you get the average SSI payment of $697, you might see an increase to about $715, which is an extra $18 per month. Over a year, that adds up to about $216 more.
Seniors aged 65 and older, who get an average payment of $574, could see an increase to $589, giving them an extra $15 per month. The maximum amounts would be $967 for singles and $1,452 for married couples.
So, the lower your payment, the smaller the increase seems.
